Planning Ahead for Your Language Proficiency Test

One of the big mistakes exam takers make is that they wait until the last possible minute to register for a language proficiency test such as the TCF Canada or TCF Quebec. It is common to think that if you get through all the studying and are completely ready, that is the time to book the exam. This approach is an excellent way to reduce stress. Here is a quick breakdown of how to plan ahead and improve your chances of success on that upcoming proficiency test.

Register Early, but Not Too Early

If you wait until you feel that you have studied everything and are completely ready to register, you are likely to put off doing any studying because you know there is not anything on your calendar you have to be ready for. Additionally, when you are finally ready, you may not be able to find the dates that work for you for the TCF Quebec exam registration or TCF Canada exam registration. There is also the thought that no matter how much you study, you might never feel ready and do not book the exam at all. Finally, you might finish all the studying, feel perfectly ready for the exam and then have to wait days or weeks before the exam. The information will no longer be fresh in your head when exam day comes.

Register once you have started to study, but not before. You need the date of the exam as a target to aim for. Having a deadline can be motivating. If you book a date too far into the future, you will find it too easy to delay studying and that can become a habit. Before you know it, you will be a week before your exam and will not have studied at all!

Make Clever Use of Other Study Tools

You are far from the first person to have gone through taking a language exam, so look around for study tools that help. If others in your friend and family circles have done tests, ask them what worked best. Explore taking preparation courses and consider the materials available on the France Education International site to help you study if you are doing a TCF Canada or TCF Quebec exam.

Focus on the Content You Struggle With Most

It can be really easy to focus in on the things you know well when you are studying for an exam. Obviously, it feels naturally good to feel smart and capable. You may feel a nice confidence boost from only focusing on the parts of the exam where you are bound to succeed. However, the places that you will struggle with on the exam cover a variety of information that you probably do not know as well or as confidently. It is the information you do not know well where you must put the majority of your time. Try aiming for a 70% to 30% balance of focus, where you put 70% of your time into the areas where you need to work harder and 30% into the areas where you are most confident. Balancing out your study routine will add to your preparation and increase your overall odds of success.
